The Celsus Library at Ephesus in Turkey

Celsus Library

We travelled to Turkey in February just four or five years ago and stayed for a week on the coast, apart from one night further inland, which was when we visited the ancient city of Ephesus. It was a fascinating and educational historical visit if on the day rather cold! The coach deposited us at the top of a hill and the ancient path led down a valley through the remains of the city to a point where the route swung slightly right and at that point we could see the amazing structure that is the facade of the ancient library built in 117AD. It was constructed as a monumental tomb to Gaius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus whose body lies beneath the ground floor under a statue of Athena Goddess of Wisdom. Told you it was educational!
It really is a magnificent site and the scale can be judged from the photograph by the size of the people standing near the entrance. It is a three storey building which 1900 years ago was quite a feat to construct. However, there is a slightly amusing tale that goes with the educational and that is the arch to the right and in front had a somewhat less serious function. It led to the local brothel! When the wife asks where you are going as you are exiting the house the reply, 'I'm just off to the library pet!' has a new meaning!

Just a big thank you to those people who visit my blog on a regular basis, particular the three people in Russia. There are many more visitors from other countries that I am always grateful to but I have rather neglected the Russian contingent!

The reason for the title today - the book signing is approaching and I want it to go well!

God Bless
