Braised Faggots in Onion Gravy with new potatoes and green beans
Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK, especially South and Mid Wales and the Midlands of England. It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork. I have used liver, bacon and minced beef as suggested by Mitzie Wilson in her recipe book simply entitled 'Mince!'
Faggots have gone out of fashion which is a shame because they are rich, hearty and economical. The full recipe is on the appropriate TAB but from a cost point of view I made 14 faggots and 2 or 3 are quite filling. The mince was expensive at just under £3 but the bacon and liver were less than £1 each and the beans were 50p and potatoes £1 with enough to serve 5 or 6 meals in total. The herbs and other cooking ingredients I tend to have in the cupboards and you use such small quantities that per meal the cost is minimal. If asked to put a cost per plateful as above would be less than £1. Speaks for itself really!

The nomenclature is not as appetising as the eatables
Social class escalation - no longer enticing
The well-heeled consume sleeker edibles
Faggots are cheap in these days of stricture
Simple to make and meatily satisfying
Don't be too proud to add to the picture
Food on the plate to the family supplying
Faggots are good hunger is never
A war time meal can teach us a lot
High in protein, minerals whatever
But cheap enough to fill the pot
Let's not be too proud to learn from the past
Economics may drive us to learn lessons that last
