A vapour trail from a meteor this morning!

Moscow (CNN) -- A meteor streaked through the skies above Russia's southern Chelyabinsk region Friday morning, before exploding with a flash and boom that shattered glass in buildings and left hundreds of people hurt.
The number of people reporting injuries climbed to more than 500 by lunchtime, according to Vladimir Stepanov, of the National Center for Emergency Situations at the Russian Interior Ministry.

This was a bit of a reminder for films such as Armageddon and Deep Impact. From the point of view of writing there are interesting details about the long distant affects of such showers. The meteor doesn't actually have to hit to cause damage. News articles like this can add verisimilitude to our work as well as increasing personal knowledge so reading articles about disasters, both natural and otherwise enriches the writers experience and therefore the pool of information available if that is your area of interest.
This type of research is really just about life and is on going but we mustn't forget what we have learned.

An asteroid, measuring 50m across, will pass within 17200 miles of Earth tonight. An expert scientist was asked if the Russian meteor could be related to this larger, Olympic swimming pool sized rock, asteroid's trajectory and he was quite non-committal!
