Poetry Thursday 49 - 14/02/13

Saint Valentine (in LatinValentinus) is a widely recognized third century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since theHigh Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love.

St Valentine's Day Massacre is the name given to the 1929 murder of seven mob associates as part of a prohibition era conflict between two powerful criminal gangs in Chicago: the South Side Italian gang led by Al Capone and the North Side Irish gang led by Bugs Moran. Former members of the Egan's Rats gang were also suspected of having played a significant role in the incident, assisting Capone.

Aftermath of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Top to bottom: Peter Gusenberg; Albert Weinshank; Adam Heyer; John May; Reinhardt Schwimmer (lying almost out of picture at bottom). At right against wall is James Clark.

I think history has repeated itself. I vaguely remember writing something last year and then producing a second effort and below is once again my second effort. It could be that my emotional IQ is about as low as it can get!

Valentine’s Day

It shouldn't be about how much you pay
for the cellophane wrapped flower bouquet.
It shouldn't be about the cards you send
for the postman to deliver to your friend.
It shouldn't be the size or quality of gift
that you've bought perchance to heal a rift.

Valentine’s Day is a chance to express
the love you feel within your chest.
An opportunity to please the one
your whole being is dependent upon.
Take the chance to show your emotion
to the significant subject of your devotion.
