Poetry Thursday 70 - One of those days.

One of those Days

Celebration of a birth not celebrated.
A vision of a mortal ending re-kindled.
This was the culmination of another faithful life with a
legion of mourners to watch.
Good wishes from family appreciated.

A social event staged for after
with sounds of relieved chatter – even laughter!
A memorial of two lives so very different but linked by
the sincere worship of God.
Residing in mind for the future.

No wish to be there longer than seemly.
The purpose of it all not sitting comfortably.
Neither would mind the meeting of old friends for the one
represented.
Both would have enjoyed the company.

Neither a bad day nor one that was good.
One wouldn’t imagine a way that it could.
It was less than a year since she had passed and less than a
month for the father.
Tomorrow just another day – things better understood.

This is my interpretation of the funeral of Father Dominic Whitnall from the Community of the Resurrection in Mirfield. Fr Dom was an amazing character who influenced many people in Battyefeord and Mirfield in West Yorkshire. He was also the man who was probably singularly responsible for Dr. Desmond Tutu becoming involved in the church. He was buried on 01/07/2013 which would have been my mother's 91st birthday. She died October 24th 2012.

The style of the poem is something that came to me as I was writing. It may be that it is not unique, I don't know, but it just seemed okay to me. There is an explanatory sentence embedded in the middle of each verse which can be removed and the poem still works.

God Bless
