Writing - Where stories come from sometimes

James Thurber

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I have just returned from the cinema where I have watched Ben Stiller's interpretation of this story by James Thurber. Several thoughts occurred to me on my way home.
Firstly, the 'zoning out of Walter when he shifts from reality to a fantasy situation. This is really where imagination takes over when you write something. Have you ever been writing and lost track of time and your situation, no matter how briefly? Is this not the point at which inspiration is in full flow. Perhaps James Thurber recognised this in his own writing and so produced the short story that spawned this film.
Secondly, from one perspective this is a love story nothing more and nothing less. The relationship between Walter and Cheryl runs throughout the film and is sensitively handled even to the point of a relationship established between Walter and Cheryl's son Rich.
Finally, there is the adventurous side to the film in which Walter tackles a range of exciting and hazardous tasks. There is even a nod towards the dog eat dog world of business take over and redundancies represented by the character Ted. When I worked for the bank I met one or two 'Teds' who would obey the company line irrespective of the affect on the people that suffered from their ministrations.

Overall I thought that this film was brilliant from several aspects not least the performance and direction of Ben Stiller
