Tuesday Recipe - Spicy fish and bacon stew and a horror story about margarine

Another fish recipe that would satisfy the cravings of the lads for spicy food. On top of that it is very tasty and easy to make.

Spicy Fish Stew

There are few secrets in cooking anything and none in this dish. The heat comes from cayenne pepper and you can add as much or as little as you like. The base for the meal is a tomato sauce made from tinned tomatoes, chicken stock, white wine and onion. The overall effect is great taste.

The recipe can be found on the relevant tab at the top of this page.

Butter v Margarine

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.

Margarine was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They've even come out with some fancy  new flavourings.

The real difference between margarine and butter is as follows.

Both substances have the same amount of calories, butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8gms; compared to 5gms for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine less than 100 years.

Margarine is very high in Trans fatty acids. It triples the risk of coronary heart disease; it increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol.

Margarine increases the risk of cancer five times; lowers the quality of breast milk; decreases immune response and decreases insulin response.

Margarine is one molecule away from being plastic and shares 27 ingredients with paint!

In fact anything with hydrogenated in the title is to be avoided as it means hydrogen has been added to change the molecular structure.

Open a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or a shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things,

a) no flies, not even fruit flies will go near it (should be a warning to you)
b) it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it.

This is because the substance is almost plastic.
