Writing - Your most dramatic year.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth described 1992 as her annus horibilis as there had been so many unhappy family incidents.

Well it would be more interesting for us to perhaps consider which year was our most dramatic. You know the sort of thing, a year where all of your New Year's resolutions came true - you lost weight, made money and married an heiress!
Obviously the longer you have lived the harder that may turn out to be.

This could be a writing exercise producing a short article. It will probably involve a modicum of research and information of a more general nature about that year. In the interest of time I shall select the year my first child was born - 1979

January
Coincidentally, it was the international year of the child.
The winter of this year was described as the 'winter of discontent' which included numerous strikes. PM Callaghan denied there was discontent in the country.
25th - the first recorded killing of a human by a robot.
February
YMCA by the Village People was number 2 in the charts.
Nottingham Forest make the first £1 million transfer.
March
The Callaghan Labour government falls triggering a general election.
April
Our third wedding anniversary
Iran declares itself an Islamic republic
My 29th birthday.
May
4th Margaret Thatcher elected first woman PM
Alien - starring Sigourney Weaver released.
Arsenal bt Man Utd 3 - 2 in the FA Cup Final
June
27th Muhammad Ali retires from boxing again
July
A holiday in Yugoslavia - Pula, with a heavily pregnant wife.
Sony introduces the Walkman.
Navratilova and Borg win Wimbledon.
August
27th Earl Mountbatten of Burma killed by the IRA
September
I began my eighth year at Ovenden Secondary school
My wife celebrated her 24th birthday.
October
Mother Theresa of Calcutta awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
November
Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat premieres
Ross David Atkinson weighed in at 7lbs 10ozs on the 27th by epidural ceasarian.
December
Things rarely go smoothly with new babies and by Christmas Day the mother had milk fever and the little one was hungry!
One worrying aspect of 1979 was that there were numerous (more than 1 per month) nuclear tests throughout the year. Countries responsible were USA, USSR, France, Israel and the UK.

I haven't written an article, simply a journal of a very busy year but I hope it gives the idea of what it takes to research such a special year. I could have gone into even greater depth either in the realm of sporting achievements or politics or more.

At the current time there is the presidential election in the USA and if you consider the electoral system there is undoubted connection back to the events of 9/11. There is the involvement of the security agencies, unexplained and precipitate actions by the US Government and a failure of security agencies to communicate knowledge with each other. Many of the same people are probably still in post 15 years later. So read 7 Hours After and allow your mind to wander freely and decide what is fact and what is fiction.

Synopsis

Patrick Steele is off crusading once again with his sidekick, fiancée Naomi Kobayashi. This time he is risking life and limb by returning to the hostile shores of the USA. He has had brushes with the authorities in that vast country on previous occasions, but now has been stimulated to return because of apparent dodgy dealings over the World Trade Centre disaster of September 11th 2001.
After discovering numerous ‘theories’ concerning 9/11 and who was behind it, Steele identifies possible links between large corporations with financial interests and political parties. In a presidential election year he is concerned that those vying for that prodigious post may have links with the disaster.
Has Steele discovered underhand dealing by the US security services?
Did one of the major political parties have a hand in the destruction of 9/11?
Will Steele be caught by the CIA or can he escape back to the safety of the UK?
