Tuesday Food Blog - Soup and soap

Another soup as after the actions of our government this week as a country we could well be in it.
Soups are a great way of getting your five-a-day although in this one there are only three but in plentiful supply. As a single person there are always ingredients available. It also provides the alternative to throwing fresh food away.

Broccoli and potato

Broccoli, lots of
Potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 pint of vegetable stock
1 onion, chopped
2 oz butter
salt and pepper to taste

For this I use a large stock pot and begin with melting the butter then frying the onions until they are soft. Towards the end of the frying I added the garlic and fried it for a couple of minutes and then add the vegetables. The potatoes were added then stock and finally copious amounts of purple sprouting broccoli, leaves and stalks as well as florets. The vegetable stock was poured over and the whole pan full of vegetables seasoned and brought to the boil. The lid was put in place and the heat turned down.
Simmer for twenty minutes or so and then blitz with a hand held mixer away from the heat.

I served mine with croutons although you could have crusty bread, the sky's the limit.

Please do not be fooled by the cattle food that is passed off as broccoli by supermarkets which is more correctly called calibrese. Purple sprouting broccoli is a far superior vegetable.

AND just for fun.

When it comes to selling the names of substances are very important but I have problems imagining a room full of the great and the good coming up with the above name for antibacterial hand wash. Why would 'night blooming' actually be meaningful to anyone? Is this something that happens while we sleep? The mind boggles.

God Bless
