Poetry Thursday 311 - Institutionalised

What a weekend. The wedding between Harry and Meghan, the English and Scottish Cup Finals; a collection of big emotion events. I saw bits of the first and all of the second and can only say that as a football fan the wedding was vastly more interesting! I can't speak about Celtic's predictable win.

An Institution

Marriage is an institution,
but who wants to live in that situation?
Harry and Meghan have made their choice,
but how much was in Harry’s voice?

Did Meghan twist the regal arm,
with promises to keep him safe and warm?
But Harry beware your dark-haired wife,
(Cockney rhyming slang) trouble and strife.

With good reason in my experience,
as strife was a frequent occurrence,
but the early days were full of sun,
laughter, support and lots of fun.

So Meghan and Harry make the most,
of each other and remember the toast,
good health, long life and happiness,
before it descends into scratchiness.

Then they will celebrate and rightly so so here is an old offering from 3 years ago.

Another beginning

It all starts again
but the celebrations are now over.
Like pushing a toy yacht from the shore
now it’s up to you to take over
and drive onwards to the future.
The waters are an uncharted plain
and you are the wild rover.

You believe you have the helm,
that you decide the direction
but the winds blow and currents tug
and you struggle to hold the perception
of where you think you’re headed.
Suddenly fear shakes your realm
and you have to manage that interjection.

When you can see the other shore
this leg of the journey is almost done,
celebrate once again, arrange the party stuff,
have a single night of fun.
Drink until you've had enough,
for tomorrow it all begins again.
You must go for years more
until at last your life is gone.
